Start with your boat, not the motor
Every hull has a maximum rated horsepower set by its builder, shown on the capacity plate or in the owner's manual. That rating is the ceiling — fitting more power than the plate allows is unsafe and can void insurance. Work down from that number rather than up from a budget.
Then decide how you use the boat. Getting a loaded boat onto the plane, towing, or working against current all favour more power; a tender that only moves between mooring and shore does not.

Practical checks before you order
